Town waterfront, not cottage country

The Long-Sault Bridge crosses Île du Chenail to Grenville, Quebec. The island is Confederation Park, a public waterfront park with a boat launch, picnic areas and river views. When Hydro-Québec built the Carillon generating station downstream in the early 1960s, the river rose along Hawkesbury’s shoreline and much of the island went under water.

  • Municipality: Town of Hawkesbury
  • Water and sewer: the Town runs a drinking water system drawing from the Ottawa River, and a wastewater treatment plant
  • Conservation authority permits: not part of SNC’s Ottawa River jurisdiction; ask the Town which approvals apply
  • Boat ramps: Confederation Park and Cyr-de-Lasalle Park, May 1 to October 31

Boat ramps and docking in town

At Confederation Park (1 John Street), you can launch with a daily or seasonal pass. At Cyr-de-Lasalle Park (571 Main Street East, access via Philippe Street), only a seasonal pass works. A pass is also required to park a vehicle with a boat trailer, and overnight docking carries a fee. If the home has no frontage of its own, build the pass into your budget and confirm rates with the Town’s recreation desk.

What the Town is planning for the waterfront

The Town’s 2026 Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommends a continuous boardwalk or trail along the eastern waterfront, linked to the existing Discovery Trail and Confederation Park, and a concept plan for Cyr-de-Lasalle Park. These are recommendations, not approved projects.

The same plan notes that much of the waterfront is in mixed ownership, and that parts of it have floodplain constraints and possible brownfield conditions. Ask the Town’s planning department what is proposed near a lot you like, and if the land or its neighbours have an industrial past, ask your lawyer whether an environmental review makes sense.

Flood and basement checks in town

Hawkesbury is outside South Nation Conservation’s Ottawa River jurisdiction, so the Town is where you confirm zoning and whether a lot falls in a flood hazard area. In town, the basement deserves as much attention as the shoreline: look for moisture, a working sump pump and a backwater valve, and ask the seller about past sewer backups and the high water of 2017 and 2019.

Riverfront, river view or river access?

Listings use these words loosely. Before you pay for the water, know which one you are getting:

  • Riverfront: the lot reaches the water. Confirm it on the survey, along with any shore road allowance or easement.
  • River view: you see the river but own no frontage. Ask what could be built between you and the water.
  • River access: a shared path, right-of-way or nearby public launch. Have your lawyer confirm any shared rights in writing.
  • Condo near the river: review the status certificate and the reserve fund study before you firm up.

Hawkesbury riverfront FAQ

Are Hawkesbury riverfront homes on municipal water and sewer?

Homes in the Town’s serviced area are; the Town of Hawkesbury owns a drinking water system that draws from the Ottawa River and a wastewater treatment plant. Check with the Town that the specific address is connected. Any private septic system in Hawkesbury falls under South Nation Conservation’s permit program.

Where can I launch a boat in Hawkesbury, and what does it cost?

Confederation Park on Île du Chenail accepts a daily or seasonal pass, and Cyr-de-Lasalle Park accepts a seasonal pass only. Launching runs from May 1 to October 31. The Town sets resident and non-resident rates each year, so check the current fees before you buy a home without its own dock.

What is planned for the Hawkesbury waterfront?

The Town’s 2026 Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommends a continuous boardwalk or trail along the eastern waterfront and a concept plan for Cyr-de-Lasalle Park. These are recommendations, not approved projects, so ask the Town what is proposed near a property.

What should I check in the basement of a riverfront home in Hawkesbury?

Look for moisture, a working sump pump and a backwater valve, and ask the seller about past sewer backups. Overland flood and sewer backup are separate insurance coverages, so price both for the address.

Does the past use of waterfront land in Hawkesbury matter?

It can. The Town’s master plan notes possible brownfield conditions along parts of the waterfront. If a property or its neighbours have an industrial past, ask your lawyer whether an environmental review makes sense before you firm up.

What is the difference between riverfront, river view and river access in a Hawkesbury listing?

Riverfront means the lot reaches the water, which the survey should confirm. River view means you see the river without owning frontage. River access usually means a shared path, right-of-way or a nearby public launch, and any shared rights should be confirmed in writing by your lawyer.
